Rejuvinating chemical peels include the following:
AHA’s (alpha hydroxyl acids), lactic acid (sour milk), glycolic acid (sugar cane), malic acid (apples), and tartoric acid (grapes). These are used in different strengths, and often in combination for superficial desquamation (peeling) resulting in smoother texture and more evenly pigmented looking skin.
BHA (salicylic acid) is derived from willow bark, wintergreen leaves and sweet birch. Salicylic acid is used in various strengths, generally 10%-30%, and often combined with AHA’s or TCA for super facial peels. Anti-inflammatory effects are useful in treating traditional acne and rosacea as it improves comedones (black heads) and red inflamed popules.
TCA (Trichloroacetic acid)- comes in crystal form, and then mixed with distilled water in preparation for light peels. A superficial peel is performed in concentrations ranging from 10%-25%. It is used for softening fine lines, improving skin texture and lightening hyperpigmentation disorders. A deeper peel would range in concentrations of 35%-50%
Jessner solution is a combination of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol. The peel is controlled by the number of coats applied. The results are comparable to that of other acids or TCA.
