Needling is an alternative to laser re-surfacing of the skin. Needling preserves the epidermis and stimulates collagen deposition in the dermis. Needling is used for treating wrinkled upper lips as well as difficult scars. Chemical peels may be included.
Different Types of Scars
Did you know that there are different types of scars? Four different types to be exact:
- Keloid scars are scars that go beyond the actual injury itself. But it’s caused by aggressive healing. Normally you will see keloid scars on dark skinned people.
- Contracture scars are burn scars. Normally those types of scars can cause limited movement.
- Hypertrophic scars are like Keloid scars, except that they are red and stay on the surface of the injury.
- Acne scars are the last type. These are the scars that almost everyone has seen and usually are the most common
Scar Revision Procedure Types
There are three types of treatments for scar revision. There is prescription ointments, creams, and gels. There is also surgical removal and finally, treatment and injections.
For some acne and hypertrophic scars, prescription ointments can sometimes be used. Normally the ointments, creams, and gels work wonders on those types if you know what type of skin you have and what your dermatologist or physician says. Because if you’re not using the correct ones, then you are just wasting your time.
Now if you are going to do injections, then the doctor usually does an injection of steroids. Injections are typically used with hypertrophic and keloid scars. The injection is to make the scars less obvious or makes can make the keloid scars rise back to the even level with the skin. Normally the injection is used in conjunction with the creams. The injection will be done first and then the doctor will prescribe the choice of ointments, creams, and gels.
The only time that surgery is used is on people that have contracture scars. Also if the scar is keeping you from being able to function, then surgery will be done. If the contracture scar is too bad, then skin grafts are normally done. There is also a way of surgery that is done by using lasers.
Now if you have had surgery and you have a scar, then see if ointment, cream, and gel can help the type of scar you have.
