So often clients ask about probiotics and prebiotics at our skin care clinic especially since we address the diet and digestion with regards to skin health… you have it!

Probiotics are the good bacteria that help keep our digestive system healthy by controlling growth of harmful bacteria. Probiotics are live bacteria needed and beneficial for a healthy gut.

Prebiotics are carbohydrates that cannot be digested by the human body. Prebiotics are food for probiotics they induce the growth or activity of bacteria and fungi that contribute to the well-being of their host.

As we mature, we are faced with many threats to the beneficial bacteria in our gut… from chlorinated drinking water… to overly-processed foods… to prescription medications such as antibiotics… to the antibiotic carry-over from the animals we consume as food.

The “good” bacteria in our gastrointestinal system can only provide us with optimum health if the proper balance of different types of bacteria is maintained in our gut. Probiotics can be most beneficial… not just on our GI health, but on our overall health as well. Know that, 80% of our immune system actually lives in our gut.

They both would play a role in healthy digestive function… Prebiotic provide the substrate that probiotic flora metabolize to function properly. So, a prebiotic will support the probiotic’s role in “health promotion”, including digestion.

We find probiotics naturally in foods such as; pickles, sauerkraut, kombucha and some varieties of yogurt(fermented foods). For recommended supplements or probiotic brands, see your physician or clinician.

PS ~ because of their great benefits, we are now seeing probiotics in skin care preparations for numerous conditions especially to decrease inflammation.
